"Back then, when I was a young woman, there were still witches." This is how Nana Alba always started the stories she told her great-granddaughter Minerva. These legends have lingered with Minerva her whole life. Maybe that's why Minerva is now a PhD student studying the history of horror writing and looking into the life of Beatrice Tremblay, a little-known writer of scary stories.
While working on her thesis, Minerva finds out that Tremblay's most renowned book, The Vanishing, was based on a real event: Tremblay went to the same university as Minerva decades before, during the Great Depression. He grew enamored with his gorgeous and ethereal roommate, who then mysteriously disappeared.
Minerva gets deeper and deeper into Tremblay's work, and she starts to feel that the evil thing that hounded Tremblay and the missing girl might still be on campus. These scary things also remind me of the stories Nana Alba recounted about her childhood in Mexico in the 1900s, when she had a scary run-in with a witch.
Minerva thinks that the same shadow that made her great-grandmother and Beatrice Tremblay's lives dark is now threatening her own in 1990s Massachusetts. A career in academia might be hard, but it can be deadly when witchcraft is involved.
